The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US on five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on figures that were at the heart of efforts to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This row threatens to become a facet of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.
