McDonald's has pulled a holiday advertisement created using Artificial Intelligence after facing considerable online backlash.

The brief spot was created with the help of AI-generated video and was originally published publicly for the Dutch branch of McDonald's on 6 December.

Audience Response and Removal

Shortly after its release, commenters denounced the use of AI in the advert. Many labeled it "creepy" and "poorly edited".

"This moment is an key lesson as we examine the proper use of generative technology," said a spokesperson from McDonald's Netherlands.

The commercial was developed for McDonald's by Dutch company TBWA\Neboko and US production company The Sweetshop. It portrayed a series of things that might go awry during the festive season, with the slogan "not the most wonderful time of the year".

The Phenomenon of AI in Advertising

Commercials that feature generative AI have emerged as a growing phenomenon among large brands, particularly for the Christmas campaign season.

  • Another beverage giant has recently released back-to-back AI-generated holiday ads.
  • Inherent Limitations: Since clips produced with current AI video tools are susceptible to degrade the more extended they are, the majority of AI video outputs tend to be roughly six to 10 seconds in length.
  • Industry Concerns: The video also provoked concerns about the replacement of human roles in the advertising sector, with some critics stating it might negatively impact opportunities for production staff.

Defense from the Creators

Following the video's removal, The Sweetshop's chief executive, Melanie Bridge, spoke in support of the advert.

Bridge claimed, the production process took "seven weeks" and involved generating "countless iterations" which were then shaped during the edit "in the same way we would on any traditional production".

"This was not an AI trick," she commented. "We consider it a finished piece."

Divisive Public Reception

While the McDonald's ad was largely criticized, the sentiment for other AI-generated holiday ads has been varied.

For instance, a recent AI-created Christmas ad from Coca-Cola reportedly garnered a significant "positive sentiment rating" from viewers.

However, other businesses have likewise faced backlash for employing the technique in advertising. Luxury fashion house Valentino, for example, was criticized for advertisements that some described as "lazy" and "uncanny".

The incident underscores the ongoing debate within the marketing and production sectors about the balance between new tools and human craftsmanship.
