Zak Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opening batter Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments made by skipper Stokes about the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered those words in several interviews following England's loss in the second match of the Ashes against the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where England are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," remarked Stokes.

However, following the opener made 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the press with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" observation after his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The team afterwards went on a break to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third Tests.

Before the Adelaide contest, he revealed his team had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay alive in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, Crawley stated the guidance from Stokes and coach McCullum had remained consistent with their prior tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," noted the opener. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat entering this game."

The Hosts On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal on day four came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – meant the chasing side six down for 207 chasing a daunting target of 435.

Consequently, the home team need four wickets on the last day to move to an unassailable 3-0 lead with three matches played.

A loss would prolong England's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes series defeat.

The current battle will be completed in just 11 days of cricket – after England losing the initial matches in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined so quickly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"It's disheartening," said the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it with that mindset," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a very, very good team. It was always going to be tough touring here against them. They entered as the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

Although the opener's innings in the third Test likely secures doubts about his immediate future in the side, Pope looks under threat for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 runs in the team's second knock on Saturday, extending his modest returns versus Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

Only one other English batsman since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top order in Ashes Tests and recorded a lower average.

But, the opener said any notion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – referring to the press – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has played some really good knocks. It is noise from the outside. There is no chat of that nature on Ollie in the camp," Crawley concluded.
